2024 – Annus Horribilis

I’m totally done with 2024. It’s been a no good, horrible, terrible year. My sister Pam died in June. My husband and love of my life died in July.  Democracy died in November. As Queen Elizabeth called it in 1992 — “annus horribilis.”

BUT — I am writing this from Cabo San Lucas, where I have been the last few days with my whole family, enjoying time together before we all go our separate ways. I have three great kids (and an amazing daughter in law)  and four fantastic grandkids. I cannot wait to share the great things that will come their way this next year and the years after. So while this year wasn’t the best, and sadly may not even be the worst, there were some highlights to enjoy — all four grandchildren doing well, on their way to college and exploring their passions. All three of my children and my daughter in law (no longer children) fully accomplished adults with jobs that demonstrate their ability and commitment. Everyone in good health, mental and physical. I have a few small health issues but at 83 I am in decent shape!

No matter what the political environment turns out to be this year, I am determined to do what I can to be kind, take action when I can, and continue to write and blog about what aging when you are in your 80s is really like.

Happy New Year Everyone!! We deserve one!

  1. Wishing you a better year… And yes, keep writing! Keep hoping. And keep being kind.. I’ve decided that my act of rebellion to all that’s going on is to continue to be kind wherever and whenever I can, with appropriate boundaries when needed. Kindness is not weakness…. It is strength. The strength to keep loving and keep believing in the goodness of most people….

  2. There are things we can’t change, but we can make our own sphere a better place. I’m with you, Linda. So sorry for your huge losses, and so admiring of your positive stance!
